For older people, I think it is more about tradition. Both my parents had $6,500 coffins and would not have had it any other way

The coffin is obviously more for the one's left behind, then for the dead. For some reason, unconsciously perhaps, we can confuse dollars spent as the amount of love we have for the one that left us.

For me, I am with Willie, a potato sack will do. Though i highly doubt either of us will get our wish.

Plus those funeral homes know how to take advantage of an emotional time. As we tend to over spend on emotion.

Funerals are a scam. Especially the coffin bait and switch. There are people who would be embarrassed to display a particle board coffin with their ex loved ones body in it. There would be whisperings among the gathered that you are cheap from attendees who do not want to be there anyway. Heard in every household in the land. So and so died so I suppose we have to go and pay our respects. Talk about a wasted day. We need to go back to the Black Death days when a horse drawn cart trolls through the neighborhood with a loudspeaker now which would be far more effective and blare "Throw out your dead, curbside pickup only". That would be the end of it. No charge, no fuss, no muss. I suppose maybe a nominal fee for pickup and disposal is warranted but certainly no coffin, service, cemetery or expense for a food layout after is necessary.
